Gippsland Leads Wait For Public Housing

Gippsland’s public housing waiting list is growing faster than in anywhere else in the state, Liberal Member for Gippsland Province Philip Davis said today.

Public housing figures released today show waiting lists in Gippsland have blown-out again, with many desperate families remaining without permanent homes.

The Early Housing Waiting list covers people who are experiencing or at risk of recurring homelessness, people with a disability with significant support needs and others with special housing needs.

The figures show that in the last quarter the early housing waiting list went up by:

  • 46% in Sale
  • 24% in Morwell
  • 16% in Bairnsdale

These numbers continue the Bracks government’s failure to house Gippsland’s most needy families. Since June 2000 the Early Housing Waiting list has risen by:

  • 1800% in Sale
  • 1250% in Morwell
  • 670% in Bairnsdale

Since June 2000 the number of people waiting for Early Housing in Gippsland has risen by 976%

Overall there are 1193 families waiting for Public Housing in Gippsland, an increase of 33 families this quarter.

"The Bracks Government has presided over five long years of public housing failure," Mr Davis said.

"Under the previous Liberal Government, public housing stock increased by more than 1600 homes in 1998-99 and by more than 1400 homes in 1999-00.

"Under the Bracks Government’s mismanagement this has plummeted to an abysmal 59 additional properties in 2004-05."

Mr Davis said with more than 35,000 families on the public housing waiting list in Victoria, it was shameful that the Bracks Government is housing 141 fewer families than it did in June 2000.

"Victorians need a government that is prepared to take responsibility for fixing the declining standards of public housing in this state," he said.
