Latrobe Valley Energy Sector and Jobs Secure

Liberal Member for Gippsland Province Philip Davis has welcomed the security of 800 Latrobe Valley jobs with the extension of Hazelwood power station access to coal resources.

Mr Davis said the Government’s announcement that Hazelwood’s owners International Power would be granted access to its west coal field was a relief to many Gippsland families employed in the industry.

He said the power station currently employed 500 direct staff and 300 contractors, with the significant flow-on affect of these jobs financially supporting the entire Latrobe Valley region.

"Providing more than one fifth of Victoria’s power supply, Hazelwood is a crucial part of the state’s energy network," Mr Davis said.

"The extension of the life of these jobs to 2030 is a significant boon for the entire Gippsland region," he said.

"The region has suffered many hard knocks in recent years so I am pleased these jobs have been secured and there will be room for further employment in the future.

"This $400 million investment into the Latrobe Valley by International Power will have a significant impact on the local economy for many years to come."
