Table tennis exchange visit to China a winner

Latrobe City’s sister city cultural relationship with the City of Taizhou was further strengthened by the recent successful table tennis sports exchange visit to Taizhou in Jiangsu Province, north of Shanghai.

Latrobe City’s junior table tennis team competed against teams from three middle schools in what was an action filled series and returned home having drawn the series with the Taizhou teams.

The team of six girls and six boys visited Taizhou as part of a cultural learning exchange facilitated between the sister cities.

According to Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Lisa Price, the sports exchange was an excellent and practical way for young people to effectively learn about the Chinese culture.

"This exchange was part of Latrobe City’s sporting exchange program which earlier this year saw a junior basketball and soccer team compete in Japan with our sister city, the City of Takasago. The China visit completed this year’s sports exchange program and I was privileged to see our table tennis team acquit themselves really well in Taizhou.

"All of our players demonstrated their capabilities very well, especially when we acknowledge that table tennis ranks world-wide as China’s national game. If we all think of a Chinese sport, it will invariably be table tennis, so our final results were outstanding.

"This sports exchange program enabled our younger community to learn first hand about the key features of Chinese culture. Besides playing table tennis, the children were hosted by Taizhou Middle School number 1 which is the sister school to Traralgon College. At Minxin Middle School, where we played another tournament, the team became involved in classroom activities as well as seeing the daily routine of life in China.

"Our visit also included Shanghai, one of the world’s largest cities in the world’s fastest growing economy. I know this visit highlighted a great deal, proving very effective and positive for the children’s education about Australia’s connection with China."

The table tennis team was selected last year and went through an extensive training session in preparation over several months for their trip.

Managed and coached by Traralgon Table Tennis officials, Kerri and Rob Thompson, the team received support from a successful fund raising program that included a sports memorabilia auction, raffle and chocolate sales and sponsorship from Latrobe City, Australian Paper, Tru Energy, Loy Yang Power, and The Flight Centre.
