Latrobe Kerbside Collection On HoldThe kerbside collection of hard garbage has been put on hold by Latrobe City due to new manual handling legislation introduced by the Victorian State Government. By Latrobe Shire Council - 31st August 2004 - Back to News The annual collection of hard garbage was suspended by Latrobe City Council following the introduction of the Victorian Workcover Authority’s ‘No Lift’ policy. The Workcover legislation is aimed at reducing the number and severity of injuries to employees engaged in the picking up and loading hard waste materials.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that as a consequence it has been necessary to suspend the service.
"We have a duty to all the employees and contractors working on behalf of Latrobe City to introduce work-safe practices and ensure that we keep injuries obtained from lifting and loading hard waste to a minimum," Cr White said.
"Hours of access and operation for the transfer stations in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon have been increased so that the community has greater access to the stations, and access to Yinnar Transfer Station has been maintained, making it easier for residents to dispose of their hard garbage," Cr White added.
Latrobe City Waste Education Officer, Peter Collins, said it is important that residents dispose of their hard rubbish appropriately. "Only material listed as recyclable in the ‘Your New Recycling and Waste Service’ brochure, supplied to each household with the new bins, is able to go in the recycling bin.
"This does not include contamination such as vehicle wheel rims, fencing wire or metal pipe, which can cause serious problems at the Materials Recycling Facility. These metal items can be disposed of, free of charge, at the transfer stations", Mr Collins explained.
Other items such as gas cylinders, batteries and unused tins of paint can be taken to Ecorecycle’s Free Household Chemical Collection Day between 1pm and 4pm on Saturday 4 September at the Latrobe City Depot, Driffield Road Morwell.
"This is an ideal opportunity for residents to safely dispose of chemicals, oils and other items that cannot be put out with normal garbage or recycling," Mr Collins said.
"Residents are also encouraged to take full advantage of the fortnightly greenwaste collection that was introduced as part of Latrobe’s new recycling and waste collection service. As long as branches are cut into small pieces and are no thicker than 10 centimetres they can be put into the green waste bin, along with other garden prunings. Residents can even put rose clippings into the green waste bin," Mr Collins concluded.
