Melbourne Businesses Encouraged To Consider Latrobe Melbourne-based medium to large businesses were given the opportunity to explore the comparative advantages of relocating or expanding into regional Victoria at the ‘Better for Business’ Expo held at Zinc, By Latrobe City - 24th May 2007 - Back to News Federation Square, Melbourne on Thursday 17 May 2007.
Latrobe City Council, a member municipality of the State Government’s Regional Cities Victoria, participated at the expo in conjunction with nine other councils from regional Victoria.
Latrobe City mayor, councillor Tony Zimora said that the ‘Better for Business’ campaign, launched by the Victorian Government in August 2006, capitalised on the state-wide focus of the ‘Investing in Provincial Victoria’ campaign.
"The expo was an ideal opportunity for council to showcase Latrobe City to Melbourne businesses to take advantage of the lower business costs, comfortable lifestyles and the comparative business benefits of operating out of Victoria’s regional cities, and therefore attract new investment to these cities," Cr Zimora explained.
"Business leaders attending the expo were given the opportunity to meet with regional council representatives, hear real life experiences and to learn from regional business leaders about the advantages of doing business in Victoria’s regional cities," Cr Zimora added.
Amongst the expo’s guest speakers, Jacinta Allan, Minister for Employment, said that regional Victoria had created almost half of the total number of jobs in regional Australia for the three months to April this year.
"Across Victoria’s regions, the strongest employment growth was in Gippsland with 6.8 per cent jobs growth for the quarter. Regional Victoria is the jobs powerhouse of regional Australia, outpacing the resource states of Queensland and Western Australia," Ms Allan said.
Cr Zimora added that it was pleasing that the Gippsland region was seen as a strong growth area, and that Latrobe City could capitalise on this image.
"We are in a prime position to encourage businesses to look at the Latrobe region as an area for expansion or relocation. This expo certainly afforded us some positive exposure and raised the profile of Latrobe City," Cr Zimora concluded.
