The launch was attended by representatives from the Victorian Education Department, local government schools, local independent schools, and Monash University.

The Education Plan aims to enhance the health, wellbeing and prosperity of individuals and the community through learning.

"We’re very proud of this plan," explained Richard Perry, Community and Economic Development Director.

"Not just because of the clear actions and timelines it sets out, but also because of the great relationships Council has formed with local education providers throughout the planning process," he said.

Guest speakers at the launch were lavish in their praise.

Ms Karen Cain, Assistant Regional Director at the Department Education and Early Childhood Development, Gippsland, attended the launch and congratulated Council on its foresight.

"Bass Coast Shire Council is leading the way.  There is no plan of this significance anywhere else," she said.

"Every parent in your community wants the very best for their children.

"Young people in our classrooms are going to be entering a global community, and this plan goes a long way to ensuring they have the skills and knowledge needed to enter into this world," she said.

These comments were echoed by Associate Professor Harry Ballis, from Monash University’s Gippsland campus.

"This coherent and cohesive statement is an important document both for Monash and for Bass Coast Shire," he said.

"Monash has a desire to become a regional university of the people for the people.  This plan will help us to develop a more dynamic relationship with communities, where communities can embrace education and make it work for their region."

Mr Michael Brewin, Principal at Newhaven College, said that it was a privilege to be involved in the Reference Group which developed the Education Plan.

Mr Garry Dennis, Principal at Wonthaggi Secondary College, agreed.  He added that it has been pleasing to see the positive relationships that have developed as a result of the Reference Group.

The Bass Coast Shire Council Education Plan also aims to ensure that the region is able to respond to the demands of a growing population and requirements for a range of skills and knowledge.

The large turnout at the launch was very pleasing for the Council officers involved in the two-year planning process for this crucial document.
