Kiwis fly to Gippsland to prepare for Games

The New Zealand national women’s basketball team will travel to Wellington Shire to prepare for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

By Wellington Shire Council - 19th July 2005 - Back to News

Wellington Shire Council has announced Gippsland will again host a major pre-season Women’s National Basketball League tournament featuring top Australian sides and the New Zealand national team.

It will only be the third time a basketball tournament of this magnitude has been staged in Gippsland, with Wellington again staging the event thanks to campaigning efforts of its Leisure Services team.

The competition will be staged from 16 to 18 September at the Bishop Phelan Stadium in Sale, with Heyfield and Maffra also hosting games. Teams participating include Bulleen, Canberra, Adelaide, Dandenong and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), along with New Zealand Tall Ferns Basketball Teams.

As well having the opportunity to watch these top flight teams battle it out on the court, the community will also be able to watch open training sessions.

Wellington’s Deputy Mayor Jeff Amos said: "Hosting this prestigious event is great news for the Council and the Shire. We will be attracting top international players to our patch and they are great role models for our young people and indeed the whole community. These players are renowned for their dedication, fitness and healthy lifestyles, which are terrific qualities we can all aspire to."

Cr Amos said Wellington’s selection as host for the event reflected confidence in the Shire.

"It shows that when it comes to staging major sports events such as this, we can compete with the best.

"The tournament is certain to attract a great deal of interest and support from the people of Wellington and from much further afield, with the local economy and tourism also set to benefit."
