Car park mega-project announced for Traralgon CBDA $5 million dollar construction project to ease Traralgon parking problems and provide additional food and fashion retail outlets, has been announced for the Seymour Street car park in Traralgon’s CBD. By Latrobe City Council - 8th May 2006 - Back to News The project, which the developer Leo Di Fabrizio says is likely to commence early in the new financial year, will create more than two hundred additional car parking spaces in the central Traralgon business precinct.
Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said $2.9 million is being invested by council in building the car park and retail facility, which will be constructed on three levels by the Latrobe Regional Development Group on the existing car park land.
"The new facility will stretch between Seymour Street and Hotham Street, operate seven days a week, incorporates five retail premises abutting Seymour Street, and will include new toilet facilities to replace the existing toilet block," Cr Price announced.
The developer envisages the project will be completed in the February-March period 2007.
Latrobe Regional Development Group director, Leo Di Fabrizio, said the project will employ local expertise and contractors. "We are very excited to be working with council on this project which delivers a much needed facility that will act as a stimulus and incentive for local businesses, by creating much needed additional parking," Mr Di Fabrizio said.
"The project relationship between Latrobe City Council and the Latrobe Regional Development Group has facilitated a seamless, optimum development allowing for both effective economic and functional community benefits.
"These benefits can briefly be summarised as a net increase of some 200 additional car parking spaces, along with the construction of a significant commercial/retail infill that will revitalise an underperforming area of the commercial business district," Mr Di Fabrizio added.
Latrobe City councillor, David Wilson, said that the announcement of the Seymour Street car park development project is great news for the people of Traralgon in particular, as well as the whole Latrobe Valley community.
"This development resolves an issue that has long been identified as detracting from Traralgon’s growth and prosperity - that of providing adequate CBD parking. The insufficiency of CBD parking was the single biggest issue that came out of my own community survey. The announcement of this development highlights how far we have now moved towards solving the problem," Cr Wilson said.
"This project comes about through an extensive, due diligence, rigorous and transparent process; a strategic alliance between council and the Latrobe Regional Development Group that provides a win-win result.
"This is an excellent example of the public sector working efficiently with the private sector, resulting in an outstanding benefit to the community.
"This announcement also provides encouragement to the private sector, that this council is prepared to investigate opportunities provided there is a viable benefit for the community," Cr Wilson said.
Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, said council was currently working with local traders on strategies to minimise any inconvenience during the construction phase.
"There will have to be some short-term pain endured by way of fewer central parking spaces in the CBD during the seven-month construction period, to achieve the long-term gain that this project will deliver," Mr Buckley said.
"We will be looking at current parking restrictions and where applicable making necessary changes; identifying and publishing details of alternative parking arrangements in and on the edge of the CBD; and considering other initiatives that will encourage the retention of shoppers in the CBD while these works are being undertaken.
"The end result is a fantastic facility for the community that will ensure Traralgon remains sustainable and liveable as a great town to shop and do business in," Mr Buckley added.
