Work Underway To Preserve Significant Oak TreeOne of municipality’s oldest parkland trees suffered the loss of a large branch last month and Latrobe City Council’s arborists are busy undertaking remedial works to try to preserve the tree. By Latrobe City - 8th February 2012 - Back to News Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen, said that English oak tree (Quercus robur), estimated to be 130 years old, was located at Sandbanks Reserve on the Traralgon/Tyers Road.
"The failed branch is estimated to be around 35% of the tree’s total foliage. Council’s tree maintenance crew has since cleaned the area up and spread a layer of mulch around the base of the tree. Further remedial works around the oak tree will continue over the coming weeks, including closing off the area around the tree from vehicle traffic by removing the road, reseeding it with grass and installing bollards and road closed signs.
"Council’s arborists will closely monitor the oak tree’s health and structure and administer any further arboriculture treatments as needed," Cr Vermeulen said.
"Council hopes that these works will preserve this significant tree for many more years for the community to enjoy. Many of the trees in the Sandbanks Reserve, including this tree, are registered with National Trust Victoria as part of the Significant Tree Register because of their age and size. We will do our utmost to ensure this tree is given every chance of survival," Cr Vermeulen concluded.
