Community Gives Council A Sign

Members of the community have contacted Council in regard to the large number of illegal signs throughout the Shire

By Carol McCormack - 3rd September 2002 - Back to News

Members of the community have contacted Council in regard to the large number of illegal signs throughout the Shire. In response to these complaints, Council officers will be informing owners of illegal signs that they must be removed.

"Illegal signs are those on public land, such as nature strips and roadside verges, as well as some signs on private land," said Cr John Gains, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council.

Cr Gains explained that such signs are illegal under the Bass Coast Planning Scheme and Local Law No. 8. This is because they affect the amenity of the area and because they may cause visual obstructions for motorists or other safety hazards for the community.

The method of getting rid of illegal signs will be a staged process. Different types of signs will be targeted at each stage of the process. Council will send letters to owners of the illegal signs requesting that they be removed. If owners do not remove their signs, Council will collect them.

"This action is in direct response to complaints that we’ve received from both members of the community and local business owners," said Cr Gains. "The Shire is an area of tremendous natural beauty, and these illegal signs are seen as a blight on this beauty."

"We hope that when they are contacted by Council about their illegal signs, local businesses will take action themselves to comply with community expectations," said Cr Gains.

More information about signage in the Shire is available from Stuart Green, Senior Planner, or Deb Amor, Senior Local Laws Officer, at Council on (03) 5671 2211 or (03) 5951 3311.
