Be Aware When Burning Off Burning Off Despite recent rain and cool weather, Bass Coast residents are reminded that care needs to be taken when burning off on rural properties. By Bass Coast - 18th March 2011 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community Safety Manager, Philippa O’Halloran, said rural property owners need to be aware of the Burning Off Guidelines created by Council and the CFA.
"Any rural property owner who is considering burning off should have a copy of these guidelines," Mrs O’Halloran said.
"The aim of the guideline is to protect the safety and comfort for all residents and visitors.
"The guidelines apply to open air burning on rural land, other than during the fire danger period and on days of total fire ban, when burning off is prohibited."
CFA Group Officer, Damien O’Connor, said the guidelines include important information like making sure you have enough water on site and a fire break.
"You need to tell your neighbours that you are planning on burning off. Also, ring Vic Fire on 1800 668 511 so you don’t get a fire truck at your property and risk a fine from Council," said Mr O’Connor.
Open air burning is not allowed in residential areas without a permit.
Mrs O’Halloran said people in residential areas need to maintain their property throughout the year.
"Our local law says that properties mustn’t become unsightly or have a negative impact on the look and feel of the neighbourhood," Mrs O’Halloran said.
"As a property owner your land shouldn’t have grass longer than 30cm or have agricultural weeds.
"This local law applies all year round," Mrs O’Halloran continued.
The Burning Off Guidelines for Rural Property Owners are available at our website www.basscoast.vic.gov.au under Services>Environmental Management or by contacting Council on 1300 BCOAST (226 278).
