Traralgon Scores $100,000 Towards New Change Rooms

Traralgon’s growing numbers of junior sports participants are set to benefit from a $100,000 Victorian Government funding boost towards new change rooms at the Traralgon Recreation Reserve.

By Russell Northe - 13th April 2012 - Back to News

Making the announcement today, Nationals Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the boost was from the latest round of the Community Facility Funding Program Minor Facilities category, and would assist in providing TEDAS Junior Football Club and Ex-Students Cricket Club an adequate home base.

"The TEDAS Junior Football Club and Ex-Students Cricket Club are like so many other sport and creation clubs at the heart of this community and they provide an important place for people to get together, get active, and share their love of sport," Mr Northe said.

"In 2010, TEDAS approached Latrobe City Council with a proposal to develop a multi-use pavilion at the Traralgon Recreation Reserve to provide for female and male change facilities for players and umpires and club room facilities for both football and cricket users.

"For 50 years the TEDAS club has serviced the Traralgon East side of Traralgon, predominantly for junior football and cricket, but the club has never had its own clubrooms or change room facility.

"Likewise, Ex-Students Cricket Club have provided many locals with the opportunity to participate in all forms of cricket over a long period of time and their successors have been well deserved.

"It is important that the community has access to community sporting facilities that can provide low cost, inclusive community and sporting opportunities as it is imperative to the future health and social outcomes for the local community.

"With more and more sporting opportunities becoming available at the reserve, especially for juniors through Auskick, Milo in2CRICKET and local competition, this funding boost ensures Traralgon clubs can continue to cater for even more players and supporters.

"And it’s not just local sports clubs that benefit, students from other community groups will have access to the new pavilion facilities for sports carnivals, fundraisers, recreation, meetings and other get togethers," he said.

The proposed pavilion developments will include new change rooms with shower and toilet amenities capable of catering for junior squads who currently are without change rooms.

Mr Northe said the project was one of 67 projects across the State to receive over $4.3 million in funding from the Victorian Government’s Community Facility Funding Program – Minor Facilities category.

"By improving the quality of local facilities, we are providing more opportunities for grassroots clubs to expand their memberships get more people together and involved in local sports," Mr Northe said.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen, said that the funding would make a huge difference to the users of the recreation reserve.

"This project is going to benefit so many members of the community, not just the playing members of the clubs who use the reserve, but the local residents and visitors who enjoy the facilities too. The ripple effect of a joint project of this nature is far-reaching and we look forward to its completion when the Traralgon Recreation Reserve will afford top quality facilities to all who use it."
