Bass Coast Council seeks community feedback on draft 2025 Governance Rules and Election Policy until 17 July 2025
Bass Coast Shire Council is seeking community feedback on its draft 2025 Governance Rules, including updated election policies, aimed at strengthening transparency, fairness, and accountability. Consultation is open until 17 July.
Bass Coast Shire Council has endorsed its draft Governance Rules 2025, including an updated Election Period Policy, for public consultation. Endorsed at the June Council Meeting, the draft rules will be open for community feedback from:
- Wednesday 19 June to 5.00pm
- Thursday 17 July 2025
Governance Rules inform the Council meeting process, including public questions, petitions, and election period legislative obligations.
Your feedback will help ensure fair, open, and community-focused decision-making processes. Consultation is now open until 17 July - have your say
Strengthening local governance
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Rochelle Halstead, said the proposed updates reflect council's commitment to transparency and continuous improvement. "Good governance is the foundation of community trust," Cr Halstead said. "These rules guide how decisions are made and how Council operates - particularly during sensitive periods like elections. We've reviewed them closely and are now inviting our community to help shape their final form."
The current Governance Rules 2022 have been in place for three years and supported Council through the 2024 Local Government Election. The review has identified ways to improve clarity, address inconsistencies, and strengthen governance practices - particularly in the lead-up to elections.

Community members are encouraged to review the draft and provide feedback during the consultation period. "The draft rules aim to ensure our processes remain fair, accountable and clear. Community feedback will help us make sure we're on the right track," said Cr Halstead.
Following the consultation, all feedback will be reviewed and considered in a final report to be presented to Council at its August meeting. The draft Governance Rules 2025 are now open for feedback until Thursday 17 July 2025, to make a submission, visit Governance Rules 2025 | Engage Bass Coast website.
