The new Council for Wellington Shire has wasted no time in getting work, with all Councillors immediately involved in a two-day induction and planning session, and meeting to elect a Mayor and Council Committee members.

The new Mayor is Cr Malcolm Hole. Cr Hole has been on Council since 1999 and was previously Mayor in 2001/2.

"I am genuinely honoured to be elected Mayor of Wellington Shire Council and thank my fellow Councillors for the confidence they have shown in me," said Cr Hole.

"This will be a challenging year as the new Council resolves several major issues.

"Involving smaller districts in tourism, advocating for sewerage in small towns, completing the regional aquatic centre, and defending local water from Melbourne authorities will be important tasks for Council," said the Mayor.

"Two key tasks will be maintaining financial stability and continuing our effort to involve the community in decision-making.

"We will restructure our links with community groups by establishing district committees to ensure they are better involved in local decisions," said the Mayor.

"Our drive will be to meet the challenge of an aging and slowly declining population by promoting our Shire, our people, our natural assets, our lifestyle and our economic stability to attract new people to live ,work and play in Wellington Shire, Victoria," said the Mayor.

The new Wellington Shire Council comprises five existing Councillors and four first-time Councillors.

The induction and planning session was conducted at Yarram on Monday and Tuesday and included detailed briefings on Council issues, activities, processes and finances. The Councillors also took the opportunity to outline to staff their own priorities for the forthcoming three years.

"I congratulate all Councillors on their election to Wellington Shire Council," said Mr Lyndon Webb, Chief Executive Officer for Wellington Shire Council.

"The voters of Wellington Shire have elected a blend of experience and new blood and already indications are that this will be a very successful mix for Council," said Mr Webb.
