East Gippsland Water Scoops Leading Industry Award For Innovation

East Gippsland Water has scooped a prestigious state award for innovative infrastructure development through its delivery of the Woodglen Water Treatment Plant and new storage projects.

These have been built to help ensure long-term drinking water security and water quality for the region.

The corporation has received the Infrastructure Project Innovation Award from Australia’s water industry body, the Australian Water Association (AWA), in its annual round of awards for Victoria. The entry will now go forward to compete for honours at the national level.

The new water treatment plant at Woodglen, north west of Bairnsdale, is helping to deliver a highly effective water quality and security solution for 24,000 people across an area encompassing the major communities of Bairnsdale, Paynesville and Lakes Entrance. A highly successful strategy for procurement and project delivery enabled the plant and new 715 megalitre off-water storage to be provided ahead of schedule, and an associated aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) system to be developed. The ASR system is expected to come on line shortly.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Managing Director, Les Mathieson: "It means a great deal to us to receive this award from the AWA, as it is recognition from our peers in the water industry that we are doing some outstanding work here in East Gippsland.

"Against the backdrop of the fires and floods that struck our region three years ago a $45 million package of initiatives was accelerated. A number of projects were brought forward to ensure long-term water security and reduce the need for water restrictions. We successfully delivered our Woodglen initiatives, working in partnership with the Bairnsdale office of engineering consultants AECOM, ahead of schedule and under budget, which is a fantastic result for our customers."
