Incident Highlights Need For Safe Ocean Access: Ingram

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has called on the State Government to fund and construct improved blue water ocean access at Mallacoota in light of a potentially serious accident that occurred at Bastion Point on Saturday.

A local man was injured when he was crushed between the boat trailer and the boat after it was caught by a swell.

"Thankfully, his injuries are not as serious as first thought, but this incident still highlights the risks associated with the current facility," Mr Ingram said.

"It’s extremely disappointing, considering the proposal to solve the safety risks at the site have been locked in red tape and opposition from a minority community group for decades.

"The incident is exactly the type of accident that the new ramp is designed to address.

"Over the past decade, I have been working with the East Gippsland Shire Council to progress the project.

"The single most important reason for this effort has been the real concerns of the safety of the existing facility, which was built as a temporary structure over three decades ago.

"Saturday’s incident shows the urgent need to upgrade the ramp and build a safe facility that meets recognised Australian Standards," Mr Ingram concluded.
