Council Community Safety Plan up for comment

Do you feel safe in the Bass Coast Shire? Do you think there are community safety issues that need to be addressed?

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 3rd July 2006 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council has developed a Community Safety Strategic Plan (CSSP) for the Shire, which is now up for community comment.

The Plan was developed in consultation with key community groups and community safety agencies such as Victoria Police.

Council’s Community Safety Manager, Peter Laydon, says the aim of the Plan is to make Bass Coast a place where everyone can enjoy the region safely.

"Community safety is both the perception of feeling safe and the reality of being safe.

"Whilst statistics indicate that Bass Coast is a safe place to live, work and play, it is critical that the perception of safety within the community remains positive."

The CSSP, Mr Laydon continued, will help Council to continue to work proactively and in partnership with the community to create a safe environment for residents and visitors to Bass Coast.

"It has been developed as an easy to read document that promotes a Shire-wide approach to community safety," he informed.

The Plan proposes that a Bass Coast Community Safety Working Group be established, including members from Council, Victoria Police, other Emergency Services agencies and the community.

"This group will have an ongoing responsibility to monitor the implementation of the Plan," explained Mr Laydon.

"In addition, they will help develop new strategies to address any emerging issues."

It is recommended that the plan be revised every four years to ensure it continues to be integrated into the Council’s overall vision. The CSSP has also been designed to compliment the South Gippsland and Bass Coast Local Safety Committee Plan that is developed under Victoria Police.

Copies of the CCSP are available at any of Council’s Customer Service Centres in Wonthaggi, Cowes, Grantville and Inverloch or on Council’s website www.basscoast.vic.gov.au.

Comments on the Plan must be made in writing to the Chief Executive Officer, Bass Coast Shire Council, PO Box 118, Wonthaggi VIC 3995 by Friday, 28 July 2006. Please note that submissions may be made available to the public.
