Northe Celebrates SES Week In Parliament Victorians are being urged to wear orange today to show their support for the amazing work of the state’s hard-working SES volunteers, Member for Morwell Russell Northe said today. By Russell Northe - 14th November 2013 - Back to News "Wear Orange Wednesday is a chance for Victorians to say thank you to SES volunteers with a splash of orange attire," Mr Northe said. "SES Week is a national celebration of the dedication and commitment of the thousands of men and women who selflessly volunteer their time and energy with their State or Territory’s State Emergency Service.
"SES volunteers keep our communities safe. They are a vital part of Victoria’s emergency response relief and recovery efforts."
He said "Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW) Day is an annual day to thank SES volunteers – who put on orange overalls, at all hours, to provide emergency assistance for floods, storms and road rescues.
"There are 5,000 SES volunteers in Victoria who regularly don orange overalls and head out into storms, floods or road rescue emergencies to keep their neighbours safe. "In the 2012-13 financial year alone, Victoria’s SES volunteers responded to more than 18,011 requests for assistance," Mr Northe said. "Of the more than 325,274 hours worked, 79,423 were spent responding to storm damage and 15,840 to flooding." Dress up in orange and upload a photo for your chance to win great prizes including tickets to Day on the Green, an iPad, school clinic with the Melbourne Tigers and reserved seating at sporting events. Mr Northe said "I recently had the pleasure of attending the Victorian State Emergency Services National Emergency Medal presentation for East region, it was great to see so many local members recognised for their dedication to duty and commitment to safety of the community.
"It was pleasing to see the hard working SES personnel given the recognition they truly deserve," Mr Northe said.
"The Coalition Government continues to support Victoria’s State Emergency Service including in the Gippsland region. For example Morwell SES previously received $100,000 towards the purchase of for a new medium rescue truck, and $80,000 has been committed to construct a new shed to house a road rescue vehicle in Morwell to improve emergency response times.
"On behalf of the Coalition Government and the people of Victoria, I congratulate the SES for the hard work they do to protect our community."
