Immunisation Needs A Whole Of Life Approach

As part of Gippsland Immunisation Month, Latrobe City Council is reminding residents about the importance of continuing immunisation through the whole of life and not just during childhood and school.

Latrobe City’s manager health services, Andrew Mackintosh, said that immunisation against preventable diseases should continue throughout life in order to stop diseases from emerging within our communities.

"Immunisation is particularly important for young adults planning to start or who have started a family, people travelling overseas to high risk countries, people working and volunteering with vulnerable community members such as children, seniors and those with ill health, as well as people playing contact sports," Mr Mackintosh said.

Mr Mackintosh added that this year has seen the introduction of a new funded vaccine aimed at preventing cervical cancer in women and is available to young women aged 18 to 26 years along with secondary school females through a school immunisation program.

"The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine along with routine immunisations such as measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, adult diphtheria and tetanus and annual influenza (residents over 65 years) are available through Latrobe City’s immunisation sessions and at local medical clinics.

"For travel vaccines, including adult hepatitis A and B, residents should contact their own medical centre or a travel clinic," Mr Mackintosh explained.

Further enquiries in relation to adult and child immunisation, including session times, can be directed to Latrobe City on 1300 367 700 or visiting the website on www.latrobe.vic.gov.au.
