Disability self-help group Gippsland Carers Association Inc will be able to continue providing vital support to people with a disability in the Morwell electorate thanks to a funding boost from the Victorian Government.

Member for Morwell, Russell Northe said $7,500 would be provided to Gippsland Carers Association for general operating expenses, to purchase equipment, carry out maintenance and operate the activities of disability self-help groups.

A disability self-help group is a self-managed group of people, who meet regularly to help each other to better understand and manage their disability.

ˇ§This is a fantastic result for Gippsland Carers Association and means people with a disability, their families and carers in our local community will be able to continue to support each other,ˇ¨ Mr Northe said.

ˇ§Gippsland Carers Association does an amazing job in turn the Coalition Government has provided this funding to support the work they do.ˇ¨

Minister for Disability Services and Reform, Mary Wooldridge said the investment in Gippsland Carers Association was part of the latest funding package of more than $466,000 which will support 106 disability self-help groups across the state.

ˇ§The Coalition Government has consistently recognised the importance of providing support to community based disability self-help groups where people with disabilities can help each other to live independently and make informed decisions about their own lives,ˇ¨ Ms Wooldridge said.

ˇ§This funding compliments the Victorian State Disability Plan 2013-16, and reflects its focus on creating a society where people with disability are supported to participate in community life in the same way as other members of the community.ˇ¨
