By Latrobe City - 24th February 2006 - Back to News The ceremony to receive the Baton commences at the Celebration Site at 5pm, midway through the concert starting at 3pm, which involves hundreds of schoolchildren from across Latrobe City, performing song and dance reflecting many of the Commonwealth nations participating in the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
The baton will arrive in Traralgon at approximately 5pm, and travel via Argyle Street, Franklin Street, Hotham Street, Breed Street, Seymour Street, and return via Franklin Street to the Celebration Site.
Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, urged communities across Latrobe to turn out in force to welcome the Queen’s Baton as it travels through Traralgon streets and is welcomed on-stage at the Celebration Concert.
"This is a momentous occasion in the history of our municipality, when the eyes of Australia and many people overseas, falls on Latrobe City," Cr Price said.
"Latrobe City is an integral link in the world’s longest, most inclusive relay – ‘The Queen’s Baton Relay’. When the Queens Baton arrives at the Games after passing through Latrobe, it will have been in transit an entire year, travelled 180,000 kilometres by land, sea and air, and visited every Commonwealth nation on the way.
"Sporting and community representatives from throughout Latrobe will proudly guide the Queen’s Baton on its journey through our municipality on the Tuesday and Wednesday, and I urge communities to come out onto the streets and cheer them on as the baton passes," Cr Price said.
"The Baton’s visit to Latrobe is a unique opportunity for our local communities to join in the celebrations for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, prior to their commencement on 15 March 2006," Cr Price said.
The Traralgon community will enjoy a second parade of the Queen’s Baton on the Wednesday morning. It then travels to Morwell and Moe before leaving the municipality for Warragul.
