Public Comment Sought On Health And Wellbeing Plan

East Gippsland Shire Council is now calling for public comment on its draft Health and Wellbeing Plan that has been developed over the last twelve months.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 7th January 2005 - Back to News

The plan follows a detailed examination of issues relating to the health and wellbeing of the East Gippsland community as well as consultation with a wide range of stakeholders and service providers.

Shire Acting CEO Kate Nelson said the plan has been specifically developed to address the range of critical health and wellbeing issues impacting on the various population groups in the East Gippsland region.

"Assessment of the range of issues identified has also involved development of a Community Profile for East Gippsland, including examination of the key public health issues for our community," Ms Nelson said.

"This statistical data has been complemented by community feedback and exploration of the issues, to develop a targeted and realistic approach that Council can take to address a range of issues with and on behalf of the community."

Ms Nelson said that Local Government has an important role in planning for the health outcomes of its community.

"This doesn’t mean that Council should take responsibility for every health issue nor will it result in the need to provide a range of new health services," she said.

"Our decisions impact on the general ‘wellness’ and amenity of the community including the opportunities to recreate and exercise.

"Council also has a key role in providing information and allowing participation in a wide range of decision making processes that impact on individuals and the community as a whole."

Ms Nelson said that while access to medical care is critical in times of illness, there is clear evidence, documented by the World Health Organisation, that the social and economic conditions in which people live, have greater impact on the health outcomes of the population.

"Health policy was once thought to be about little more than the provision of medical care, but there is now acknowledgement that the social determinants to health must also be addressed," she said.

"The level of disadvantage experienced in East Gippsland is shown in our data and reveals a high level of illness in our community.

"This means that the need to focus on public health initiatives is now more important than ever."

Copies of the draft Health and Wellbeing Plan can be viewed/downloaded on the Council’s website or inspected at Shire Business Centres and Libraries. Public comments will be received until Wednesday, 23 February.
