Peace-building exhibition comes to LatrobeAn exhibition examining the lives and philosophies of Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr and Daisaku Ikeda will be held at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre from Monday 23 May to Friday 27 May. By Latrobe City Council - 20th May 2005 - Back to News Latrobe City’s Performing Arts and Venues Co-ordinator, Kathleen Roberts said that the static display of photographs would be on show in the foyer.
"The exhibition is a chance to understand how the principles of these peaceful revolutionaries could be applied in everyday life to promote a ‘legacy of building peace’," Ms Roberts said.
"Mohandas K Gandhi was a young Indian lawyer who took on the might of the British Empire and by peaceful protest achieved his dream of independence for India. He was assassinated in January 1948.
"Martin Luther King Jr, a young black American preacher championed the civil rights cause when he led the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and opposed the racist laws of America in the 1950s and 1960s through non-violent protest. He too was assassinated in April 1968.
"Daisaku Ikeda successfully challenged the authoritarian oppression of coal miners in northern Japan by their own government-backed Miner’s Union. Ikeda joined the Soka Gakkai, a Buddhist organisation dedicated to the promotion of world peace in 1947," Ms Roberts explained.
"The Gandhi - King - Ikeda exhibition is a tribute to the life’s work of these three ordinary human beings who through their heartfelt beliefs in the sanctity of every human life empowered individual people to gain control of their destinies," Ms Roberts concluded.
Entry to the exhibition is free. Schools or other groups can register to see the exhibition by calling the Box Office on 5176 3559.
