Latrobe City Council, through the Latrobe City Trust, launched the Latrobe Community Arts Fund with a morning tea at Latrobe Regional Gallery on Monday 16 May.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Michael Rossiter, said the grant would provide development opportunities for the local arts community.

"The Latrobe Community Arts Fund will aim to support the development, promotion and encouragement of the arts. It will be a great opportunity to fund a number of small projects and initiatives that increase the capacity and promotion of our local arts groups and individuals.

"Applications will be open to all categories of art including music, visual arts, literature and performing arts. You could be an artist, in a band, writers group or theatre company. You could be looking for funding assistance for training, arts projects or even co-funding for specialised equipment," Cr Rossiter said

"In particular, we are looking forward to supporting projects that develop the skills of younger people in the arts community.

"Latrobe City Council is planning significant investment in the arts via the Latrobe City Council’s Arts Strategy and Action Plan. This fund will promote greater skills and appreciation of arts," Cr Rossiter said.

Chair of the Latrobe City Trust, Diane Wilkinson, said that the opening of this fund reinforced the idea of promoting arts and creativity as the heart of the community.

"When the Traralgon Arts Council (TAC) recently disbanded, it requested the Latrobe City Trust to use remaining funds to continue its work benefiting local arts activities and promotion.

"I would strongly encourage any interested groups and individuals to apply," Ms Wilkinson concluded.
