Senior Citizen Of The Year AnnouncedLuba Dudek of Newborough was announced as Latrobe City’s Senior Citizen of the Year at an awards ceremony at Kernot Hall on Wednesday. By Latrobe City - 12th October 2007 - Back to News Mrs Dudek was recognised for her services to Latrobe’s migrant community and her contribution to the wider community through her volunteer work at the former Moe hospital.
In congratulating Mrs Dudek on being honoured, Latrobe City councillor, Cr Bruce Lougheed who presented the award, told the audience that Mrs Dudek was the proprietor of the Yallourn Guest House for fifteen years and ran the canteen at the Yallourn TAFE campus.
"Mrs Dudek’s catering skills were put to valuable use as a long time volunteer worker at the Moe hospital and she was also a founding member of the Slavic Women of Gippsland organisation. Her linguistic skills – she is able to speak English, Russian, Polish and German – have stood her in good stead as a wonderful resource for helping the many migrants who have travelled from eastern Europe to settle in the Latrobe Valley.
Cr Lougheed added that Mrs Dudek was also a member of the Moe Elderly Citizens Club and the Polish Club as well as being a keen bingo player.
"Mrs Dudek has chronicled her early days as a prisoner of war in Germany and her life in eastern Europe in a book. She also recounts her experience as a migrant coming to Australia," Cr Lougheed said.
"Being able to draw on her early experiences in Europe and as a new arrival in Australia herself, has allowed her to make a valuable contribution to those people who have perhaps come from a more troubled existence on the other side of the world to settle and live here in the Latrobe Valley.
"We are delighted to honour Luba Dudek as Latrobe’s Senior Citizen of the Year," Cr Lougheed concluded.
