National Water Week was first held in 1993 and encourages members of the community to understand and take action to protect and conserve our precious water resources.

Gippsland Water’s managing director John Mitchell said that the students are encouraged to use their creative flair to design a new image to be placed on Gippsland Water’s promotional drink bottles, using the theme of saving water.

"Students can help promote water conservation by showing how they can save water, or what they like best about water. The competition is a great way to promote a new water ethic through our schools," Mr Mitchell said.

Gippsland Water’s promotional drink bottles are distributed to various community groups and events across Gippsland Water’s service area as part of its sponsorship program.

Mr Mitchell said, "Gippsland Water is proud of its work in partnership with school communities to promote healthy lifestyles and responsible use of water."

All primary schools within Gippsland Water’s service area will receive a letter and a competition entry form inviting students in Grade 3 to 6 to participate. The winner of the competition will have their design printed on the drink bottles, and prizes will be available to both the winning student and the school.

Entries will be judged by Gippsland Water and the winner will be announced during National Water Week which will be held from 21 to 27 October 2007. Gippsland Water will also be holding a number of other community activities during the event.

Entries for the Gippsland Water National Water Week Drink Bottle Competition close on Wednesday 5 September 2007.
