New CEO looking forward to challengePaul Buckley fulfilled a long term ambition when he was formally appointed Latrobe City Council CEO last night. By Latrobe Shire Council - 3rd August 2004 - Back to News During a long career in top level local government roles in the Latrobe region, Mr Buckley has resisted numerous opportunities to fill high level roles outside of the Latrobe Valley. Instead, he has chosen to stay in the region in the hope that such an opportunity would present itself.
"It truly is an honour to be appointed to the position of CEO and I appreciate the responsibility that goes with this position. In particular, I understand an integral role of being CEO is to provide leadership to the wider community and also within the Latrobe City organisation. My goal is to be able to contribute to creating a better Latrobe Valley and wider Gippsland region. This is something that I have wanted to do for a long time and am looking forward to the challenge," Mr Buckley said.
Mr Buckley spoke of his passion for the Latrobe Valley and his vision for improving the quality of life for all residents within the Latrobe City.
"More than anything, I am thrilled to be able to stay in an area which I have lived all my life and am passionate about. In terms of lifestyle, I believe that there are very few regions that can match what we have here in Latrobe. I find it to be a safe and caring community, one in which I am looking forward to continuing to raise my family in."
Whilst obviously thrilled with his appointment, Mr Buckley is under no illusions as to the mounting challenges that he and his organisation will face in both the short and long term. He also referred to the upcoming release of the Latrobe 2021 strategy plan and the role this would play in moulding the Latrobe City into the future.
Mr Buckley added, "The challenges for all local governments are immense and we hope that this long term vision will help guide us in being able to work together to improve our region as a whole. In particular, issues relating to the effective management of our infrastructure and natural resources are at the forefront and it is crucial that we endeavour to leave our environment in a better condition than which we found it."
Mr Buckley will commence his new role immediately and is looking forward to being able to lead the Latrobe City into a new and exciting era.
"I am looking forward to be able to put my personal influence on a number of initiatives currently being undertaken within the region. We need to continue to focus on improving facilities and ensuring we build a safe and caring community. This will only be done if we can work together and share a common vision. The importance of partnerships and cooperation with industry and other levels of government and community will form the cornerstone of my leadership style. Now is the time that our region needs to look forward to the outstanding future we have in front of us, rather than focussing on the past."
