A Decade Of Games For Melbourne Student As Uni Shoots For 4-PeatThe University of Melbourne will be striving for its fourth straight Southern University Games title when it journeys to the Latrobe Valley on 4-7 July. One student who has seen it all before is Iain Scott, who will be taking part in his tenth Games. By University of Melbourne - 1st July 2005 - Back to News Mr Scott will be competing in the men’s soccer competition for the ninth time (one of his Games was restricted to coaching due to injury) as over 2000 athletes from 17 university campuses around Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania contest fiercely for the John Campbell Trophy and a spot at the Australian University Games, to be held in Brisbane in September.
As his studies draw to a close Mr Scott hopes to go out with a bang, and is eager to have another tilt at the title as captain-coach of the soccer team.
"After a decade taking part in these Games I still look forward to a great standard of sport and a lot of fun," he said.
"One of the things I like most about these Games is that you really get to know the new people in the team, and begin to develop a sense of camaraderie. It is certainly something I will miss once I have finished my Masters this year, although after so much time as a student I think it is time for a break."
Mr Scott started at the University in 1996, studying a commerce and science combined degree. He went on to do honours in Maths, and is now wrapping up his Masters in the same area.
He jumped at the chance to be involved in University sport as soon as he arrived at Parkville, and has been captain of the men’s soccer team for the last six years. One of the highlights of his time at the University was representing Australia at the World University Games in 1999.
After such a contribution to University sport, Mr Scott was rewarded with joint captaincy of the Melbourne team for last year’s national Games, which the squad also won. Regardless of his position in the team, Mr Scott said he is proud to be part of a successful combination.
"It’s nice to play in a winning team, no matter how big or small the role you play. The SUG should be a great competition once again and I’m looking forward to getting out to the Latrobe Valley with the team and playing well."
And what does he think of the team’s chances for four in a row?
"We should be up there knocking on the door again. With new faces comes fresh optimism, and we are hopeful we can go all the way again."
