Member for Morwell Russell Northe has criticised the Melbourne Labor Government for failing to adequately answer questions in relation to its own Night Network Service.

On Thursday 26th May 2016, Mr Northe asked the Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan a series of questions in relation to the Night Network service which operates from Southern Cross station to Traralgon on Friday and Saturday nights.

Mr Northe asked the following questions:

1. How many commuters have utilized the service from 1 January 2016 to 22 May 2016.

2. What is the total number of commuters who alighted at Traralgon station from 1 January 2016 to 22 May 2016.

3. What is the total number of commuters who alighted at Traralgon station per service from 1 January 2016 to 22 May 2016.

4. Have there been any security incidents on these services from 1 January 2016 to 22 May 2016.

Mr Northe said the Minister took nearly three months to provide a negligible response stating – "Patronage for Night Network services is currently more than 30,000 each weekend. Patronage on Night Network trams, trains and buses is one consideration in the Night Network Evaluation".

"I believe the Ministers answer to be unsatisfactory and unresponsive to the questions as asked so I have written to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly requesting the Minister to provide a more comprehensive response," Mr Northe said.

"It is my job as the local member to ask questions on behalf of our community and the Government should have the decency to respond appropriately."

Mr Northe said these questions were constructed in consort with a number of local stakeholders who are keen to understand patronage statistics on the services mentioned.

"For example the Traralgon CBD Safety Committee which comprises local businesses and nightclub operators, Latrobe City Council, community representatives, Victoria Police and transport operators had expressed some concern on how the night bus services would operate and understanding patronage numbers formed part of those concerns," Mr Northe said.

"With commuters on these services being dropped off in Latrobe Valley towns very early in the morning, it is important that police officers and local transport providers understand what the numbers are utilising these bus services.

"I will continue to advocate to the Government on behalf of our local community for answers on the Night Network service."
