Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange in Sale experienced significant 2024 growth in cattle (25%) and sheep/lambs (43%)

The Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange (GRLE) in Sale, Victoria has experienced significant growth in the first half of 2024, with a 25% growth in cattle numbers and an impressive 43% in sheep and lambs. This growth is attributed to an influx of new vendors, marking the first half of 2024 as one of the best since pre-COVID times.

Livestock exchange revitalised

After a number of years of declining throughput, Wellington Shire Council initiated a strategic review of GRLE in 2023 to identify key issues, opportunities, and options for the facility's future. Completion of the review was delayed with the announcement of the closure of Pakenham's saleyard. It was important for the council to engage with a range of producers, livestock agents, transporters and buyers.

The strategic review recommended continuing operations with incremental improvements to systems and technology and for council to consider the overall use of the site, repurposing any used areas noting the land sits within an industrial zone.

Following the review, Wellington Shire Council has announced its commitment to continuing the operation of the local livestock exchange, driven by a significant increase in throughput. Through ongoing engagement with stakeholders at the saleyards, council sees great opportunities to attract even more livestock particularly considering the recent closure of Pakenham. The outlook for Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange and its sellers is extremely positive.

Livestock market growth

Wellington Shire Council Mayor, Cr Ian Bye was delighted to see a substantial surge in livestock numbers, highlighting GRLE's resilience and potential. "Council remains dedicated to fostering sustainable growth within the agricultural sector, a vital component of our local economy. Considering the venue can actually handle multiple times the current throughput, we will continue to engage and support our local producers, agents and other key stakeholders."

The closure of the Pakenham Livestock Exchange presents a real challenge and opportunity for the industry; redistributing over 100,000 cattle across other selling centres in Victoria, with GRLE offering modern facilities and efficient transport into Sale, making it an enviable location for buying and selling stock.

"This month, the change in selling days highlights our active collaboration with East Gippsland Livestock Exchange, buyers and stock agents. These partnerships are crucial in maintaining a competitive and efficient marketplace". Cr Bye said.

Livestock exchange excellence

The Gippsland Regional Livestock Exchange has been a key part of the Gippsland community for over 60 years. In 2016, Wellington Shire Council undertook significant upgrades to meet modern animal welfare and environmental standards. Recently, the livestock exchange was recognised for its excellent animal welfare practices by an independent assessment, highlighting Council's commitment to best practice. • Prime cattle sale every Wednesday at 11.30am (weekly)
• Sheep sale every second Monday at 12.30pm (fortnightly)
• Cattle store sale every first Friday of the month at 9am
