"Many people are doing all sorts of interesting work in recording their community history, whether it’s about the Mornington Peninsula or right throughout Gippsland," Mr Hall said.

"The Community History Awards are a way by which the work of these people is acknowledged and encouraged, not least through the prizes available. Knowing more about our community’s past is important and helps us all develop a greater sense of where we live."

There are six categories in the awards, with a $1,000 prize for each of the category finalists. The first prize is $5,000.00.

The categories include Best Collaborative / Community Work; Best Print / Publication; Best Audio – Visual / Multimedia; Best Exhibit / Display; Best Walk / Tour; and Best Community Research, Register and Records.

"These awards acknowledge that there are a variety of formats in which history can be presented, and aim to promote excellence in whichever format is chosen," Mr Hall said.

He added that those seeking to enter needed to gain the relevant information soon, as entries close on 30 March 2007.

For an application form ring Information Victoria on 1300 366 356 (local call cost), email infovic.marketing@dvc.vic.gov.au , download an entry form from the website www.information.vic.gov.au or call Mr Hall’s office on 5174 7066.
