New Hard Waste Service

Baw Baw Shire Council has modified its hard waste service following changes to WorkCover health and safety regulations which effectively restrict the amount that can be lifted in nature strip collections.

By Baw Baw Shire Council - 5th September 2005 - Back to News

"Council will maintain a hard rubbish disposal service for residents," says Mr Raj Manihar, Environmental Engineer for the Council.

"However, the hard waste collection service in Baw Baw Shire will be to altered to meet the new requirements from WorkCover.

"The general collection of hard waste from the roadside will no longer apply. Instead, residents will have two options," said Mr Manihar.

"Within certain conditions, residents can either dispose of hard waste for free at

transfer stations, or they can pay a fee and still have waste collected from outside their premises. The fee covers the cost of additional people or equipment necessary to meet new safe lifting standards."

Details of the two options available to residential households are:

Option 1- Free Disposal of Hard Waste at Transfer Stations: Households that receive Council’s garbage collection service will be able to take their 2 cubic metres of hard waste to one of the four transfer stations (Trafalgar, Lardner, Neerim South and Erica) for a one-off free disposal of hard waste for one month commencing from Saturday 1 October 2005 to Sunday 30 October 2005.

Option 2 - Pickup Service for $20: Households that receive Council’s Garbage Collection Service are eligible to receive a one-off pick up through a booking arrangement with Baw Baw Shire Council’s Customer Service during the month of October 2005 at a fee of $20.00. Council will organise for up to two cubic metres of hard waste to be picked up from your nature strip at a pre-arranged time. The booking arrangement will start from 26 September 2005 and will end on 14 October 2005. No bookings will be accepted after that date

"Additional information on the hard waste changes will be distributed during September," said Mr Manihar.

Council will arrange for distribution of hard waste flyers giving detailed information on the new hard waste service, acceptable and unacceptable hard waste items, and tip and transfer stations opening hours. The flyer will be distributed with your Recycling and Green waste calendars.
