Record year for Great Victorian Bike Ride in Wellington

Thanks to a concerted promotional campaign by Wellington Shire, Latrobe City and East Gippsland Shire Councils, and an improved route, 3,500 cyclists are preparing to take to the saddle for the area’s stages of this year’s Great Victorian Bike Ride.

By Wellington Shire Council - 26th November 2003 - Back to News

The event, which runs from 29 November until 7 December, celebrates its 20th anniversary and has attracted its largest field in over 10 years, providing a strong platform to promote the Shire to people from outside the municipality.

It will see cycling enthusiasts from across Victoria participating in the 580km tour from Mt. Hotham to Mornington.

The itinerary sees the ride’s entourage stopping over in Briagolong on 1 December for an overnight stay, then continuing on to Yarram for a two-day stay from 3-5 December.

Local traders in Briagolong and Yarram have fully embraced the event by organising an exciting range of activities for the riders and support crew of 300. It’s expected that 70% taking part in the Wellington legs will return to the Shire as a tourist within the next 12 months.

Said Wellington Shire Mayor John Jago: "The Council has invested many hours into attracting the ride which injects considerable funds into the local economy, and this year’s record number of cyclists owes much to the hard work of everyone involved.

"The event builds Wellington’s profile and places the area in the spotlight as a prime location to hold events and to visit as a tourist destination."
