Latrobe City Council Signs Disability Charter

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley has signed the Gippsland Employers Making a Difference (GEMAD) Charter, officially committing Council to building understanding and confidence in managing disability issues.

By Latrobe City Shire - 10th September 2010 - Back to News

GEMAD, and its associated Charter, is the brainchild of Work Solutions Gippsland, the region’s largest disability employment provider, and is the first regional process of its type in Australia.

Mr Buckley said that Latrobe City was a proud signatory to the charter, and by signing it, demonstrated the organisation’s commitment to employing people with a disability.

"By reflecting the diverse nature of our community within the workplace, we can raise awareness amongst staff in relation to disability and social inclusion and to learn how work environments are likely to be structured in years to come.

"Tolerance and diversity have a positive impact on the workforce, and the community as a whole. As a signatory to the charter, I hope we can drive an important inclusive change in Gippsland.

"Working with agencies such as Work Solutions Gippsland and the other charter signatories will help promote awareness, development and implementation of Equal Employment Opportunity Policies," Mr Buckley said.

Work Solutions Gippsland’s Executive Director, Donna Faulkner, said that GEMAD drew upon the work of the Australian Network on Disability (AND) and sought to encourage employers to adopt basic principles relating to the inclusion of people with a disability in the workforce.

"As well as Latrobe City Council, we already have over 70 employers across Gippsland, including VECCI, Telstra and both Wellington and Bass Coast Shire Councils, commit to the Charter," Ms Faulkner concluded.

GEMAD will be officially launched by business entrepreneur, Bob Ansett from Budget Rent-A-Car, at a major function at Century Inn on Friday 27 August.
