Touring exhibition makes its ‘presence’ felt at GalleryCurrently showing at Latrobe Regional Gallery is ‘presence’, an exhibition of works on paper exploring the intuitive experience of presence and ensuing absence by Queensland artists Elizabeth Lamont and Sandra Ross. By Latrobe Shire Council - 5th November 2004 - Back to News Latrobe Regional Gallery Director, Louise Tegart said that the artists aimed to document the energy existing in places and objects that may be sensed but not seen.
"The artists seek to capture the feeling that occurs when something seemingly lifeless emanates a sense of history and life. The suggestion of the body is used by both artists as a vehicle to articulate presence. Ironically though, it is through this very exploration of presence that the audience is left with a sense of absence or loss," Ms Tegart explained.
"’Presence’ is a sequence of works in which the artists define the physicality of the subject matter to lead the viewer to experience the essence of the human connection with object and place," Ms Tegart said.
"Elizabeth Lamont presents an autobiographical suite of artworks that mark her passage from childhood to womanhood. Her intricate charcoal drawings on paper depict dresses that she has worn, representative of certain stages of her life. Hers is a journey into self-identity and memory – the dresses remain as a physical reminder of time, and the rendering of them documents not only their physicality, but also the presence they emanate," Ms Tegart continued.
"However, Sandra Ross’ images and artist’s books are a result of an exploration concerning the human emotional link with architectural space. She focuses on a Sydney site where a 1960s style building was demolished this year to make room for a new building which is yet to be constructed. Sandra has taken remnants of the building’s history: textural rubbings of its surfaces, photographs and writings, and has superimposed these with blue prints of the planned building and the female form," Ms Tegart said.
The tour of ‘presence’ is organised and promoted by the Regional Galleries Association of Queensland with funding assistance from Arts Queensland. The exhibition will continue at the Latrobe Regional Gallery until Sunday 12 December.
The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the gallery, please telephone 5128 5700.
