Nominations Now Open For 2007 Australia Day Awards

East Gippsland Shire Council has opened nominations for the annual Australia Day Awards that will be announced at a ceremony in Orbost on 26 January 2007.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 28th September 2006 - Back to News

Three Shire-wide awards will be decided for 2007 – the East Gippsland Shire Citizen of the Year, the East Gippsland Shire Young Person of the Year and the East Gippsland Shire Community Event of the Year.

Mayor Cr Jane Rowe said she was keen to see a lift in support for the Australia Day awards this year.

"We are looking to recognise people who show leadership, determination, concern for the community and any other characteristic that that makes an individual a ‘special’ person," she said.

"An appropriate event would be one where there is a strong community benefit and where the community has been engaged."

Cr Rowe said nominations were being called earlier than usual to provide more time to identify people and an event that could be considered to be worthy of nomination.

"These ‘shire wide’ awards are separate to the local ones presented at the community celebrations usually held in Bairnsdale, Lindenow, Paynesville, Lakes Entrance, Orbost, Omeo and Bruthen," she said.

"They are for the whole of East Gippsland and acknowledge outstanding service by an individual and/or a community event.

"Local communities can nominate local town persons and/or events and submit them into the broader East Gippsland Shire awards.

"The winners of the East Gippsland awards will be officially announced at the Orbost Australia Day breakfast ceremony on Australia Day."

Australia Day Coordinator Andrea Court said the Shire will appoint an Awards Committee consisting of the Mayor and two community representatives to decide the recipients.

"This is an important day in our calendar and we are keen to receive plenty of nominations for the various awards.

"It’s also the ideal day to celebrate with your own communities at the breakfast, recognising the efforts of those who are nominated and win awards."

Nomination forms for the East Gippsland Shire Citizen of the Year, Young Person of the Year and Community Event of the Year close on Friday 3 November 2006. They are available at the Shire Corporate Centre, Business Centres and Outreach Centres and on the Shire web site www.egipps.vic.gov.au
