$40,000 funding to tackle waterway pollutants

Wellington Shire Council has received $40,000 State Government funding to construct a pollutant trap at Flooding Creek in Sale – to help prevent pollutants like litter, sediment and oils from entering the Gippsland Lakes system.

By Wellington Shire Council - 27th February 2004 - Back to News

The trap, which is to be installed at the discharge point of stormwater from Cunninghame Street into Flooding Creek, is one of a number of projects the Government is funding across the Gippsland region under a multi-million-dollar package of measures designed to help restore the health of the Gippsland Lakes.

The Wellington initiative will significantly reduce the quantity of pollutants discharging into the creek, then into the Thomson River and ultimately the Gippsland Lakes system with which it connects.

Those set to benefit from the project include communities adjacent to the Gippsland Lakes, industries relying on the Lakes for their livelihood and Sale residents who use the Flooding Creek waterway for recreation.

Construction work is due to start and be completed this financial year.

Said Wellington’s mayor John Jago: "We welcome the State Government’s funding of this very worthwhile initiative. The Gippsland Lakes catchment area covers almost ten per cent of Victoria and is an extremely important asset for the region. The tourism and fishing industries, as well as ecosystems, depend on the health of the Lakes, and measures like this at Flooding Creek will help ensure that they have a sustainable future.

"This project builds on a number of other initiatives designed to help restore the health of the creek, such as the ongoing planting of several thousand trees along the banks by the Flooding Creek Landcare Group, assisted by the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority."

The State Government is also providing almost $1 million funding to reduce nutrient run-off into waterways that enter the Lakes from irrigated areas in the Macalister Irrigation District.
