Community To Comment On Traffic Management Plan

Bass Coast Shire Council will continue to investigate traffic and transport issues on Phillip Island with the adoption of the draft Surf Beach and Sunderland Bay Traffic Management Plan at the June Council meeting.

By Bass Coast - 10th July 2014 - Back to News

The draft Plan will be on exhibition from 14 July until 15 September 2014 for community comment before it is presented to Council for consideration.

The draft Plan originally stemmed from the Phillip Island Integrated Transport Study, which identified the need for a Traffic Management Plan (TMP) for Surf Beach and Sunderland Bay, given the high level of public concern about traffic issues in that area.

Mayor, Cr Neil Rankine, said both Council and the State Government were devoting significant resources to the transport issues facing Phillip Island.

"The development of this draft Traffic Management Plan has been a valuable opportunity for Council, the Department of Transport Planning and Local Infrastructure (DTPLI) and VicRoads to work together," Cr Rankine said.

"Both the Phillip Island Integrated Transport Study and the draft Surf Beach and Sunderland Bay Traffic Management Plan will involve all three partners working together into the future.

Cr Rankine said Council will continue to investigate traffic and transport improvements on Phillip Island with comment invited on the draft Surf Beach and Sunderland Bay Traffic Management Plan.

"The draft Plan originally stemmed from community lobbying for the Phillip Island Integrated Transport Study, which identified the need for a Traffic Management Plan for Surf Beach and Sunderland Bay," Cr Rankine said.

"There are serious community concerns about traffic issues in this area.

"The development of this draft has been a valuable collaboration opportunity for Council, community, the government department of transport planning and local infrastructure and VicRoads to work together.

"While there are no simple solutions, I believe this collaboration will see us on the right road to improve travel between Anderson and Cowes."

Churchill Ward Councillor, Phil Wright, said it was important the community had the opportunity to comment on the Plan.

"This is going to be very important for not only the local residents in the area, but everyone who uses Sunderland Bay Road.

"This is a major tourist road and it’s vital we get it right."

The Plan is available on Council’s website at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au/sbplan.
