Mayor's MessageWhat a month for special events as Bass Coast gears up to host the 2008 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix and the Jayco Herald Sun Tour. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 29th September 2008 - Back to News This weekend’s Grand Prix promises to be one of the biggest in recent memory. We are expecting big crowds, both at the track and in Cowes and even if you are not planning on going to the Grand Prix, it will have an impact on you, particularly if you live on Phillip Island.
Council is advising anyone not attending the Grand Prix to avoid the area around the intersection of Phillip Island Road and Back Beach Road on Saturday and Sunday afternoon, from around 4pm.
Back Beach Road will be given priority at the Phillip Island Road intersection and while this should help clear the Circuit as quickly as possible, it will impact on anyone travelling to and from Cowes along Phillip Island Road, at the Back Beach Road intersection.
Temporary traffic lights will operate at the intersection, with Police also on hand to direct traffic, but with Back Beach Road being given priority, anyone travelling along Phillip Island Road should expect long delays.
If you do have to be on the road, allow extra time for the trip and have plenty of water and some snacks in the car when you travel.
I urge motorists to be patient and follow advice to help get to the destination as quickly and safely as possible.
Roadworks will be brought up to a condition to allow the blue line to operate up to Grantville on Sunday again this year. The blue line provides two lanes Melbourne bound, allowing twice as many cars to use the road. It is a roadworks zone so please adhere to restrictions.
Meanwhile, up to 1,000 riders will take part in the annual Barry Sheene ride from Bairnsdale on Thursday. The ride departs from Bairnsdale at 10am and is expected to arrive in Inverloch around 2.30pm.
For those not into motorbikes, there is an event hitting our towns on the 13 October and this one’s for bike lovers of the pedal kind.
The Jayco Herald Sun Tour will kick off in Traralgon on 12 October. Stage one will travel from Traralgon to Inverloch on 13 October and Council has a number of community events and activities planned to welcome the race into the beachside town.
Riders will then tour through Warragul, Marysville, Alexandra, Mt Buller and Yarra Valley, before finishing in Melbourne on 18 October.
It should make us extremely proud to have internationally acclaimed events consider us capable of hosting their sport and I can say we are more than up for the challenge.
I would also like to remind any community group that would like to be included in the 2009 Community Directory to contact Council’s Communications team on 1300 BCOAST (226 278), or enter their details using the form available on our website. All existing groups are being asked to confirm or update their current details.
To go on the mailing list to receive a copy of the 2009 Community Directory when it is published in December, forms are available at our Customer Service Centres. Or you can contact our Communications team. Copies will be available through Customer Service and Visitor Information Centres, libraries and other local outlets in December.
