Wonthaggi Cinema to continue

Much to the delight of the Bass Coast community, the Wonthaggi Cinema will continue.

It was clear throughout the recent community consultation for the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre business case of the importance of film to the Wonthaggi and surrounding community.

Dating back to 1924, the rich fabric of film in the area will now continue with Council taking on the management of all film and kiosk operations.

After 17 years at the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre, Council is appreciative of the longevity and service Keith Stevens has provided to the community.

Responding to community feedback on the need to retain and better the current service offered, Council’s CEO, Paul Buckley, said that there is a clear way forward.

"What was clear from the outset is the community’s desire to reinvigorate the Arts Centre and to have film at the forefront of the long list of activities it caters for," Mr Buckley said.

"We expect, that through this change in management, to see a more open, considered programming schedule which allows all film goers an opportunity to enjoy the Centre and what it has to offer."

Council has now purchased the state of the art equipment, and will be continuing the strong bond with Keith as he will continue to provide an essential programming role at the Centre until June 30, 2017.

Since Keith’s retirement announcement, Council has been working alongside key community members and would like to acknowledge the important role the Bass Coast Fine Film Group plays in the provision of its highly popular cultural film screenings.

Council is now planning for the future of the Centre following Keith’s retirement and expect there to be minimal disruption to the current service provided while a handover takes place.

It is expected for cinema to be up a running again in time for this year’s busy summer holiday period.
