Council’s Outdoor Pool Hours For Summer AnnouncedWith the exception of Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day and times of local storms or lightning, Latrobe’s outdoor pools will be open for swimming every day this summer; though on cool days, By Latrobe City - 24th October 2008 - Back to News that is likely to be a guaranteed two-hour window in the late afternoon.
At Monday night’s meeting, council announced summer opening hours for the outdoor pools located in Traralgon, Moe and Yallourn North. The announcement introduces a 23 degree minimum forecast temperature trigger point, above which the pools will open for more than the guaranteed minimum two-hours.
Latrobe City mayor, Cr Bruce Lougheed, said the new outdoor pool hours being introduced this season catered for those who take their swimming seriously and take to the water regularly, whatever the weather; and those who visit the pool occasionally to cool off and relax.
During the peak season from 15 December to 30 January, excluding Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day, the outdoor pools will open 12 noon to 7pm daily, providing the minimum 23 degree forecast trigger point has been activated.
During the off-peak season from the day the pools open until 14 December, and from 31 January to 9 March 2009 the outdoor pools will open from 3pm – 7pm on weekdays and from 1pm – 7pm at weekends, providing the minimum 23 degree forecast trigger point has been activated.
The forecasted temperature at which the minimum or normal opening hours decision will be made is that predicted for the Latrobe Valley of 23 degrees or more based on the previous days 4pm forecast as issued by the Bureau of Meteorology (www.bom.gov.au/weather/). An announcement of the resulting opening hours will also be posted daily on council’s website www.latrobe.vic.gov.au.
Cr Lougheed said a number of initiatives have been introduced to enhance this year’s outdoor pool season for the community. "Firstly, there is an extended season at Yallourn North outdoor pool with the gates opening on Saturday 8 November. The Yallourn North facility is solar heated, which makes it ideal for an early start," Cr Lougheed said.
The Traralgon and Moe outdoor pools will open for patrons three weeks later, on Saturday 29 November
"The pool managers have also been given discretion to have the facilities stay open until 8pm on hot days where attendance is high, or close after 5pm where the temperature drops below 23 degrees and there are few patrons. The two-hour guaranteed swim time from 3pm – 5pm still applies though," Cr Lougheed explained.
"Traralgon Outdoor Pool will also be open for early morning swimming on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 6am and 8am.
"If at the completion of the official season on 9 March 2009 our region is still experiencing warm temperatures, the pools will be able to be opened until such time that reasonable demand is no longer existent," Cr Lougheed added.
