Active Club Grants Open To Sporting Organisations

Nationals Member for Gippsland Province, Peter Hall encourages sporting clubs, regional sporting bodies and active recreation clubs to apply for a VicHealth Active Club Grant of up to $2,500.

Mr Hall said that the Active Club Grants program aims to encourage and increase opportunities for physical activity by promoting safety and breaking down barriers such as lack of equipment or training.

"Research shows that a lack of equipment is a major barrier to participation in physical activity, particularly among those most disadvantaged and older participants.

‘Often local sport and active recreation organisations, having identified a need within their community for a new team or activity, find it difficult to acquire funding for the essential equipment or training required to allow the group to start the activity, he explained.

"This could be the only barrier to participation, and is sometimes a one-off cost.

"Through the 2006 Active Club Grants program, grants of up to $2,500 are available to clubs and organisations to purchase sport safety equipment, essential equipment and items, volunteer training or portable sun shade.

"All incorporated sporting clubs and active recreation organisations are eligible to apply, especially those who are older adults and based in lower socio economic status communities, he said.

"Guidelines and application forms are available from my office on 5174 7066, local councils, regional sports assemblies, state sporting associations and from VicHealth’s website at www.vichealth.vic.gov.au with applications closing on Friday, 15 December, 2006, concluded Mr Hall.
