Opportunity To Honour Gippsland Sportswomen

The Nationals Member for Gippsland Province PETER HALL has encouraged residents to nominate women involved in sport as part of the Victorian Honour Roll of Women.

By news@gippsland - 8th July 2005 - Back to News

Launched in 2001, the Victorian Honour Roll of Women was created to recognise and celebrate women’s achievements, and on International Women’s Day each year women are added to the Roll and to date, 332 women have been included from all walks of life, backgrounds and cultures.

"So far, the Honour Roll is representative of accomplishments across all sectors, including, education, science, medicine, sport and recreation, human rights, public policy and government, literature and arts, business, journalism, community service, media and involvement in ethnic and Indigenous communities," Mr Hall said.

In 2006 the inductees to the Victorian Honour Roll will be announced one week before the opening of the Commonwealth Games.

"The Office of Women’s Policy is calling for nominations of women who have made a lasting contribution to sport and recreation in Victoria, to coincide with Melbourne’s hosting of the Commonwealth Games.

"The nominees should reflect the impact women have had on the many different roles in sport, from high profile athletes and coaches, to administrators and volunteers," Mr Hall said.

Nominations for the Victorian Honour Roll of Women 2006 are now open. Nominations close 15 October 2005.
