By Bass Coast - 18th October 2013 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire will host the Cup in Wonthaggi on Wednesday, 23 October and Phillip Island on Thursday, 24 October.

Council’s Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane, said the area had a strong local connection to the race, with Phillip Island bred and trained horse, Woolomai, winning the 1875 Cup.

"Wollomai was owned by John Cleeland, one of Phillip Island’s earliest settlers and was stabled at the family homestead at Cape Woolamai," Mr Angarane said.

"Descendants of John Cleeland are still very much a part of the Phillip Island community and will host a function with the Cup at the original Cleeland Cape Woolamai homestead on Thursday, 24 October. This event will be open to the public."

Whilst in Wonthaggi on Wednesday, 23 October, the Cup will visit the Sate Coal Mine and the public are invited to attend.

"While in Bass Coast the Cup will also visit Inverloch Primary School, St Joseph’s in Rose Lodge and Griffiths Point Lodge at San Remo," Mr Angarane said.

"A main objective of the Cup is to generate interest in the event but also to involve local communities."

Since 2003 the Victoria Racing Club has given communities the opportunity to host the Melbourne Cup as it tours Australia and New Zealand. The Cup previously toured the Shire in 2005.
