Latrobe City Council has responded to community feedback about its proposed Local Law No.2 with a modified version of the law.

Earlier this year, Council put forward a proposed Community Amenity Local Law No.2 to supersede the current Local Law No.2 2009.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Michael Rossiter, said the proposed law was put to the community and many submissions were received objecting to parts of the proposed law.

"Council has listened to community feedback and has developed the Proposed Community Amenity Local Law No.2 2016," Cr Rossiter said.

"We’ve changed the wording to better reflect the community’s desires. We’ve resolved issues around the use of council parks, gardens and recreational reserves by the general public. A clause that restricted use of recreational vehicles on private properties has been completely removed.

"Changes to the wording of a clause about dilapidated buildings will strengthen penalties for commercial and industrial buildings, recognising the impact these ugly buildings have on the community."

The purposes of this Local Law include to prohibit, regulate and control activities, events, practices or behaviour on Council land, public places and private property, and to protect Council’s assets and regulate their use.

"Proposed Community Amenity Local Law No.2 2016 will be open for submissions until Thursday, 28 July 2016. We value your feedback and if you want to make a submission there are a number of ways in which you can do that, either online, in person, by email to latrobe@latrobe.vic.gov.au or by mail.

"To view the draft document and make a submission, attend your local service centre, call 1300 367 700 or visit www.latrobe.vic.gov.au/locallaw2," Cr Rossiter concluded.

A public meeting is scheduled for Thursday, 21 July at 6pm in the Nambur Wariga Meeting Room, Latrobe City Council Headquarters, 141 Commercial Road, Morwell for interested community members who would like to discuss their concerns with Council staff.

Following the conclusion of the community consultation period, submissions will be considered at the Ordinary Council Meeting on Monday, 22 August, commencing at 6pm in the Nambur Wariga Meeting Room.
