New Mother-Baby Mental Health Service For Traralgon New mothers in need of mental health support in Gippsland will benefit from a Mother-Baby Mental Health Service in Traralgon. By Latrobe City - 8th June 2012 - Back to News The Member for Morwell, Russell Northe and Member for Narracan, Gary Blackwood today announced the development of the new service on behalf of the Minister for Mental Health Mary Wooldridge.
Mr Northe said the new service was part of the Victorian Coalition Government’s $6 million investment in the construction of two new five-bed Regional Mother-Baby Mental Health Services, announced in the State Budget last month.
"This fulfils our election commitment and builds on the commitment made in the previous Budget to build a five-bed Mother-Baby Service in Bendigo," Mr Northe said.
"A mother-baby service will help ensure that women in Gippsland with significant mental illness are not separated from their baby and family, which impacts on their treatment, recovery and attachment to their child.
"The Traralgon service, which will be located at the Latrobe Regional Hospital, will provide intensive assessment, treatment and support so that women can receive specialist mental health treatment closer to home, rather than travelling to Melbourne."
Mr Blackwood said women will be able to stay together with their babies and continue to develop and gain confidence in their vital mothering role while receiving treatment and care,
"At the same time, mothers and their babies will remain close to the support of their partners and families," Mr Blackwood said.
"Strong family relationships are important in ensuring Victorians with a mental illness are supported in their recovery and can participate in the community.
"I am confident that this new mother and baby unit will be of real benefit to the community and we look forward to seeing the work start."
Victoria currently has 20 funded mother baby beds located at the Monash Medical Centre, Austin Hospital and Werribee Mercy Hospital.
