Council encourages community to catch up on immunisations

Latrobe City Council urges families to be up-to-date with immunisations. Read more.

The introduction of government legislation regarding immunisations has prompted Latrobe City Council to urge families to find out if children or young people in their care need a vaccination catch-up program.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Michael Rossiter, said being up-to- date with immunisations was vital to the health of the wider community.

"We believe there are Latrobe City families, with children aged over seven, and these children are now often teenagers or young adults, who have never been immunised. As well as being a risk to the health of the more vulnerable in our society, new legislation at a federal level means that families may be at risk of losing government rebates or benefits. And, at a state level, it means that younger children may not be able to access child care services.

"We are now urging families who think they might be affected by these changes and require further information about a catch up program to make an appointment with us before they attend one of our sessions," Cr Rossiter said.

"Children who arrived in Australia as refugees or asylum seekers are eligible for a 16-week grace period to start catch-up vaccinations after they enrol at preschool or child care," Cr Rossiter said.

To make an appointment with our immunisation team call 1300 367 700.

The Australian Childhood Immunisation Register will be expanded this year to include ‘whole-of- life’ registration of immunisations for all people under the age of 20.
