East Gippsland Projects Funded In Provincial Statement: Ingram

The Member for Gippsland East has welcomed specific funding for the Gippsland East electorate in the State Governments provincial statement released yesterday

By Craig Ingram - 17th November 2005 - Back to News

"It is encouraging to see the State Government acknowledge the importance of the Lakes Entrance bar to the region’s economy with the funding of sand management of the entrance, through Gippsland Ports," Mr Ingram said.

"The $31.5 million to replace the Sandpiper dredge, trial a hopper dredge and for building the sand bypass system on the ocean groynes will provide Gippsland Ports with the capacity to manage the sand at the entrance into the future and will determine the best long-term sand management strategy and the replacement for the ageing April Hamer.

"Lakes Entrance would simply not be Lakes Entrance without a safe and reliable ocean access.

Mr Ingram also welcomed another project contained in the provincial statement, a commitment to establish the Victorian Coastal Walk.

"This will build on the Wilderness Coast Walk from Cape Conran to the border," Mr Ingram said.

"This project needs infrastructure and promotion, which should come with the government’s stated commitment.

"Local ports infrastructure funding is also recognised, and I welcome the government’s commitment in recognising the needs of enhancing access and safety for recreation and commercial fishing and tourism in the region, especially at Mallacoota.

"This funding boost for local ports will provide the opportunity for the urgent upgrade of the boat ramp at Bastion Point, Mallacoota, to be built once the EES is successfully concluded, Mr Ingram concluded.
