Tibetan Monks To Create Sand Mandala At Gallery Five Tibetan monks will take up residence in the Latrobe Regional Gallery from Tuesday 9 June to Sunday 14 June as part of the ‘Sacred Footsteps from the Roof of the World Australian Tour 2009’. By Latrobe City Council - 1st June 2009 - Back to News Gallery director, Julie Adams, said that the highlight of the visit would be the creation of a traditional sand mandala.
"This exquisitely beautiful work of art depicts in minute detail the history of Buddhism and Tibetan culture over many centuries. Members of the public are invited to view the creation of the mandala throughout the monks visit and participate in a special dissolution ceremony on Sunday 14 June, when the mandala will be swept up and returned to the water or the earth as a reminder that all things are impermanent," Ms Adams explained.
"During their visit, the monks, led by Geshe Sonam Thargye, will also present a unique program of cultural events including blessing and dissolution ceremonies, public talks and a film night. There will be guided morning meditations on Saturday and Sunday, as well as daily chanting where the public can relax and listen to the monks’ deep incantations," Ms Adams said.
"To have the monks return to Latrobe City is an honour. Their presence in 2007 brought an insight into their fascinating culture and allowed us to experience the calm and relaxation of meditation and chanting and the physical beauty of the mandala. We hope that the community will again embrace the monks this year and participate in the program throughout their visit," Ms Adams said.
