Bass Coast Welcomes Twelve New Citizens

Twelve local community members were officially declared Australian citizens at the Citizenship Ceremony held at the Bass Coast Civic Centre on Wednesday, 24 April.

The new citizens’ origins include Bangladesh, Ireland, Nepal, Russia, Norway and the United Kingdom.

The formal proceedings were conducted by Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Clare Le Serve and Chief Executive Officer, Allan Bawden as MC. They were assisted by the Deputy Mayor, Cr Neil Rankine.

Cr Le Serve congratulated Ms Nasrin Baby, Mr Ahmed Mazharul Islam and Miss Tayeba Sukiya born in Bangladesh, now living in Wonthaggi, Mr Gary Cakebread, born in the United Kingdom, now living in Wonthaggi, Mrs Pauline Deering born in the United Kingdom, now living in The Gurdies, Mr Bjorn Eidem, born in Norway, now living in Bass, Ms Irina Korshunova, born in Russia, now living in Cowes, Ms Zena Liston, born in Ireland, now living in Woolamai and Mr Yalamber Limbu, Mrs Harshana Limbu and their two children Noyen and Niara, born in Nepal and living in Wonthaggi on choosing Australia as their new home.

Guests included the Hon Ken Smith, Mr Russell Broadbent, 2013 Citizen of the Year, Mr Dennis Harris, 2013 Arts and Cultural Ambassador, Ms Margaret Gardiner and 2013 Family Achievement Award Winners, Mr and Mrs John and Di Fleming.

The diversity of our new citizens is remarkable, with two of the new citizens having lived in Australia for over 50 years.

Although the numbers of new citizens in Bass Coast Shire are growing only slightly, the diversity of countries of origin is increasing.

The next quarterly Bass Coast Shire Council Citizenship Ceremony will take place on 31 July 2013.
